Piranesi, an engraver from the 18th century, became renowned for his architectural depictions of Rome and his imaginative illustrations of prisons. 19 The hypogeum was divided into chambers and tunnels that were used for various purposes including storing scenery and props. 18 If this is so, then the deeper, more intricately divided hypogeum that is visible today was built later, many believe by Domitian. Many scholars believe that the substructures beneath the arena, the hypogeum, were much simpler when first built, 17 based on the account of Cassius Dio, a Roman historian, that states that "Titus suddenly filled this same theatre with water". 13ĭigital rendering from Rome Reborn depicting the elevators of the Colosseum's "hypogeum" substructures. 9 From the time when spectators entered the arena, 10 to the corridors they could take to their seats, 11 to the seats themselves, 12 spectators were filtered based on their social status. Spectators were not free to walk anywhere they wanted, but were carefully funneled throughout the structure based on their social status. This segregation was so complete that the corridor systems made it impossible for Senators and Equestrians to run into each other, and it was possible for plebs only to meet other plebs. 8 The vaulting within the arena was crucial not only for the structural integrity of the building, but also to provide easy access and free circulation for spectators. 7 Spectators were seated based upon their social status, with the most elite viewers closest to the arena, and the lower class citizens higher up. Contemporary estimates claimed the Colosseum could seat up to 87,000 people, 6 though modern, more conservative estimates put that number closer to 50,000 people. His enthusiasm for Roman remains and his engraving talent meant he was successfully able to etch the original architecture, providing the missing pieces, completing the picture. Within the Colosseum, those four levels that are visible from outside provide huge amounts of spectator seating. Piranesi’s knowledge of ancient building methods allowed him to make a name for himself as an antiquarian, which showed earlier views of Roman landmarks. Star Trek streaming guide: Where to watch the Star Trek movies and TV shows online What makes it worse, is that we said something almost exactly the same a year ago. With the last season also giving us a lame season finale, there was quite a lot riding on this one, and while it's better than last season, Discovery's season four ender is not without its faults … and sadly, there are quite a lot of those. Looking back at all 13 episodes, we've seen some glimpses of absolute genius, we've seen some abhorrently lazy writing and we've seen just about everything in-between. We've mentioned in the past that the most consistent thing with "Star Trek: Discovery" is how inconsistent it is and this season finale doesn't do anything to alter our opinion. After a somewhat disjointed 13-episode season, that felt like it was following an almost identical template to last season and made up of two very different halves, we have the concluding episode, entitled "Coming Home." It's fourth time around for the finale of "Star Trek: Discovery" on Paramount Plus. And with that, he encourages his husband to enjoy a stroll on the Holodeck with him.Well, here we are. Depending on the supply system, one or both current-carrying connections may have significant voltage to earth ground. Single-phase sockets have two current-carrying connections to the power supply circuit, and may also have a third pin for a safety connection to earth ground. To reduce the risk of electric shock, plug and socket systems have safety features in addition to the recessed contacts of the energised socket.Ī socket may be surrounded by a decorative or protective cover which may be integral with the socket. Some plugs have built-in fuses for safety. Some plugs have female contacts that are used only for an earth ground connection. Coordination of technical standards has allowed some types of plug to be used across large regions to facilitate trade in electrical appliances, and for the convenience of travellers and consumers of imported electrical goods. Today there are about 20 types in common use around the world, and many obsolete socket types are found in older buildings. A proliferation of types developed for both convenience and protection from electrical injury. Plugs and sockets for portable appliances became available in the 1880s, to replace connections to light sockets with wall-mounted outlets. Different standard systems of plugs and sockets are used around the world. Electrical plugs and sockets differ from one another in voltage and current rating, shape, size, and connector type. AC power plugs and sockets connect electric equipment to the alternating current (AC) mains electricity power supply in buildings and at other sites. In contrast to the NRC solar system decadal survey, which spanned from 2003 to 2013, this roadmap extends from 2005 to 2035. In addition, nowhere is objective 3, which is concerned The roadmap uses the concept of habitability as its basic premise for scientific exploration, yet in its current form it does not clearly articulate how the planned investigations will address these requirements for life and how each mission will build on previous mission results. Initial steps to evaluating the habitability of a planetary environment require a determination of whether or not this combination of requirements was present long enough to allow life to originate, evolve, and persist. It is generally accepted that the requirements for life are reduced to three basic components: (1) liquid water, (2) sources of basic building blocks (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, plus minor elements), and (3) sources of energy. However, the panel cautions that the question of whether the basic requirements for the origin and persistence of life were present at some time during the history of a planet is complex. The panel agrees with this breakdown of goals and notes that it is consistent with, and supports, the goals outlined in the NRC solar system decadal survey. Both threads connect this roadmap to other strategic roadmaps through the exploration of Mars as a once habitable world, the exploration of the Moon as a preserved record of the earliest evolution of Earth and its impact environment, and the potential variety and habitability of planetary systems around other stars. The fundamental issue of how planetary systems become habitable is addressed in this roadmap from two complementary perspectives-comparative exploration of worlds and exploration of planetary architecture. Within that context five objectives are identified: (1) learn how the Sun’s family of planets and minor bodies originated, (2) determine how the solar system evolved to its current diverse state including the origin and evolution of Earth’s biosphere, (3) explore the space environment to discover potential hazards and search for resources that would enable permanent human presence, (4) understand the processes that determine the fate of the solar system and life within it, and (5) determine whether there is or ever has been life elsewhere in the solar system. The roadmap addresses the issue of habitability across two broad themes: (1) habitability in planetary environments and (2) habitability associated with planetary system architecture. ![]() Although habitability is clearly of great importance, the panel thinks that it is inadequate as the sole theme for solar system exploration and thus it undermines the role of fundamental discovery science. A second, overarching concern is that habitability is the basic premise for scientific exploration in this roadmap. One major area of concern this panel has with the solar system roadmap is that the concept of “habitability” is central to the roadmap but is not well developed in regard to scientific lines of enquiry and appropriate missions to respond to those scientific questions.
